What is GEO?

By · Mind Consulting · Updated on 10/31/2026

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of practices that get a brand mentioned and recommended in the answers of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode. It is also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or LLMO. It is SEO for the age of ready-made answers.

GEO, AEO and SEO: what is the difference

SEO competes for positions in a list of links; GEO competes for a place inside the answer. On traditional Google, people see ten results and choose which one to click. In an AI answer, the choice is already made: the AI mentions a few brands and often recommends one.

GEO and AEO are names for the same thing. Both complement SEO rather than replace it: much of what AI reads comes from pages that rank well in search.

How AI decides who to mention

When web search is on, the AI searches the question, reads a few pages and summarizes what it found. What it says about a brand depends on what those pages say. Without search, it answers from what it learned in training, which may be out of date.

That is why what third parties say about you (reviews, industry portals, forums, videos and comparisons) often weighs as much as your own website.

GEO metrics

The Georgye methodology explains how each one is calculated.

  • Visibility: how many answers mention the brand. Example: 62 of 100 answers = 62%.
  • Position: where the brand appears when mentioned. Lower is better.
  • Sentiment: how the AI describes the brand, from 0 (negative) to 100 (positive).
  • Share of voice: the brand’s share of mentions against competitors.
  • Sources: which pages support the answers, and whether any of them is yours.

What gets a brand mentioned

  • Direct answers on your own site. Pages that answer the question in the first paragraph, with concrete facts (price, timeframe, area served).
  • Presence in the sources AI reads. Industry portals, comparisons, review sites and forums where your market talks.
  • Consistent information everywhere. Same name, description and facts on your site, Google, social networks and directories.
  • Answered reviews. Unanswered complaints become the “cons” the AI repeats.
  • Structured data and easy-to-read pages. Marked-up FAQs, clear headings and content with a date and an author.

How to measure GEO

Asking ChatGPT a question now and then is not measuring: the same question can get different answers each time. To measure, you need to repeat the same questions, across several AIs, regularly, and count the results with a margin of error.

That is what Georgye does: it asks AI models what your audience asks, stores the answers and shows visibility, position, sentiment, share of voice and sources, with what to do next.

Where to start: checklist

  1. List 15 to 30 questions your customer would ask an AI before buying.
  2. See who AI models mention today for those questions, and in what order.
  3. Note which pages and sites they use as sources.
  4. Create or adjust a page on your site for each important question you are missing.
  5. Reply to reviews and fix wrong information on third-party sites.
  6. Seek a presence on the portals and comparisons AI models cite in your industry.
  7. Measure again and compare, always with the same list of questions.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO complements SEO. Many of the pages AI reads are the ones that already rank well; GEO adds the work of being mentioned inside the answer.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

None in practice. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are two names for the work of appearing in AI answers.

Can you pay to appear on ChatGPT?

There is no paid placement inside organic answers. The way in is to be present in the sources AI reads and to have pages that answer your market’s questions well.

How long does GEO take to show results?

It depends on how much the sources AI reads change. Changes on your own site can show up within weeks when the AI searches the web; changes to third-party sources usually take longer. That is why measuring regularly matters.

Does GEO work for local businesses?

Yes. Questions with a city or neighborhood, like “best dentist in my city”, are common on AI tools, and the answers usually mention only a few names.
